During the various events in the holiday region Alpe di Siusi you can learn more about traditions and customs in the Sciliar area
The hay harvest
The holiday region Alpe di Siusi - Sciliar area is the perfect place if you want to learn more about customs and traditions in South Tyrol. The hay harvest has great importance in South Tyrol and is maintained for generations. During the summer months on the Alpe di Siusi you can observe the farmers taking the hay painstakingly by hand or with modern agricultural machinery. First the grass is cut with a scythe or with the mower then it is spread on the grass to dry. Once the hay is dry it is taken up by hand with the traditional hay clothes or with the help of modern tractors. Once all the hay is included and is safely housed in the barn, the industrious workers put together and enjoy their well-deserved snack, with South Tyrolean bacon, cheese and “Schüttelbrot”.The Almabtrieb
Another highlight which takes place in October on the Sciliar plateau is the “Almabtrieb” on the Alpe di Siusi, where the shepherds and farmers accompany the sumptuously decorated cattle from the pasture back into the surrounding villages. During this event, a celebration and a farmer's market with typical products of the region should not be missed.
